VICE PROVOST FOR GRADUATE EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

1.     Management Matters

Managing people matters, whether you’re managing up, down, or across. This comprehensive, three-session workshop focuses on simple principles to communicate with and effectively manage others. Three consecutive Tuesdays: Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 and 13, 4:30-7 PM. Application deadline: Monday, Jan. 15.

2.     Designing the Professional Mini Workshop: Ideate and Prototype Your Career

In this highly interactive, two-session workshop, apply the innovation principles of design thinking to the "wicked problem" of designing your life and vocation in and beyond Stanford. Approach these lifelong questions with a structured framework and work out your ideas in conversation with your graduate peers. Two consecutive Thursdays: Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, 4:30-7:30 PM. Application deadline: Tues., Jan 16.

3.     Negotiation in Teams

Learn about how negotiation can help you positively influence the teams you work with in this single-session workshop. Wed., Feb. 21, 4:30-8:30 PM. Application deadline: Sun., Feb. 11.

4.     Flourishing: The Art and Science of a Life Well Lived

What is human flourishing and how do we practice it in an age of hyper-complexity and ever-accelerating pace? In this workshop, engage with these questions by studying, discussing, and applying research on the psychological, emotional, and social factors that promote a life well lived. Two consecutive Mondays: Feb. 26 and Mar. 5, 9 AM – 12 PM. Application deadline: Sun., Feb. 18.

5.     Quick Bytes / Breakfast Bytes

Get valuable nuggets of professional development wisdom, over lunch or breakfast, at Quick Bytes interactive workshops. Wed., Jan. 17, 12-1:15 PM: Re-imagining Your Job Search; Thurs., Jan. 25, 9-10:15 AM or 12-1:15 PM: Improvisation for Communication. Register in advance. Breakfast or lunch provided.

6.     Academic Chats

Wondering if a faculty career might be in your future? Explore the many pieces to this question in small group discussions, featuring faculty from Stanford and other campuses. Tues., Jan. 23: Non-Faculty Professional Positions in Academia; Wed., Feb. 7: Designing Your First New Course. 12 -1:15 PM; lunch provided. Register in advance.

7.     Fellows Forum

Learn new skills, meet new people. Expand your academic skills while building your Stanford network over a healthy meal. Designed for early-mid stage doctoral students, especially those in STEM fields; priority to SGF and NSF Fellows. Workshops 4:30-5:30 PM followed by refreshments and networking. Winter workshops coming soon! Register in advance.

8.     Leadership Dinners

Which leaders would you want to invite to dinner? Discuss leadership and life paths with an inspiring leader in a small group setting over dinner at the Faculty Club. Thurs., Jan. 25: Jim Woody, MD, PhD, general partner, Latterell Venture Partners; Thurs., Feb. 15: Leo Chavez, president emeritus, Sierra College. All dinners 5:30-8 PM. Sign up early; space is limited.

9.     DIF (Diversity and Inclusion Innovation Funds)

This program supports Stanford graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the development of a project that will advance diversity within those populations. Proposals accepted on a rolling basis.

10. ImaginePhD – For Humanities and Social Science Doctoral Students and Postdocs

ImaginePhD is a new, free online career planning tool for doctoral students and postdocs in the humanities and social sciences.

11. VPTL TA Orientation – Winter Quarter 2018

An orientation for anyone who will be a Teaching Assistant in any discipline during the coming year. This is highly recommended for all new TAs and is also open to returning TAs, postdocs, and other members of the campus community. Register in advance. Fri., Jan. 12, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

12. 2018 CalTrain Go Pass

For eligible, off-campus grad students only. Confirm your eligibility in advance and request your free 2018 CalTrain Go Pass—now transitioned to Clipper cards—by Friday, Dec. 15 in order to receive it before Jan. 8, 2018.

Dissertation Boot Camp

Dissertation Boot Camp offers graduate students a focused two-week opportunity to make serious progress on your dissertation or other writing project.

Grad Trivia Night is monthly! Typically consisting of seven rounds of questions, including a music and video round, with prizes for the winner of each round. Team registration starts at 7:30pm, and questions start promptly at 8pm. Come early to get a drink on us! There will be a food special as well, usually $5 nachos and $6 burgers. Proof of age is required for alcohol.
