3.     Solo Success: How to Thrive in the Academy When You’re the Only __ in Your Department

Learn about common topics described by underrepresented faculty and how to address the unique concerns of underrepresented graduate students and postdoctoral fellows entering academia. Developed by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD), whose range of services are free to graduate students through Stanford’s institutional membership. Fri., Dec. 1, 9 AM – 4 PM. Registration deadline: Mon., Nov. 27.

 

4.     Management Matters

Managing people matters, whether you’re managing up, down, or across. This comprehensive, three-session workshop focuses on simple principles to communicate with and effectively manage others. Three Tuesdays: Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 and 13, 4:30-7 PM. Application deadline: Monday, Jan. 15.

 

5.     DIF (Diversity and Inclusion Innovation Funds)

This program supports Stanford graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the development of a project that will advance diversity within those populations. Proposals accepted on a rolling basis.

 

6.     Quick Bytes / Breakfast Bytes

Get valuable nuggets of professional development wisdom, over lunch or breakfast, at Quick Bytes interactive workshops. Tues., Nov. 14, 12-1:15 PM: Connecting with Invisible Opportunities; Thurs., Nov. 30, 9-10:15 AM or 12-1:15 PM: Creating a Flourishing Life. Register in advance. Breakfast or lunch provided.

 

7.     Academic Chats

Wondering if a faculty career might be in your future? Explore the many pieces to this question in small group discussions, featuring faculty from Stanford and other campuses. Wed., Nov. 29: Developing Persuasive Arguments for the Resources You Need as a New Faculty Member. 12 -1:15 PM; lunch provided. Register in advance.

 

8.     Fellows Forum

Learn new skills, meet new people. Expand your academic skills while building your Stanford network over a healthy meal. Designed for early-mid stage doctoral students, especially those in STEM fields, with priority given to Stanford Graduate Fellows in Science and Engineering (SGF Fellows) and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows (NSF Fellows). Thurs., Nov. 9: Communicating Effectively With Your Advisor. Workshops 4:30-5:30 PM followed by refreshments and networking. Register in advance

9.     Leadership Dinners

Which leaders would you want to invite to dinner? Discuss leadership and life paths with an inspiring leader in a small group setting over dinner at the Faculty Club. ImaginePhD is a new, free online career planning tool for doctoral students and postdocs in the humanities and social sciences.

Get involved with one or more of the forty-eight 2017-2018 SPICE Projects. From education to healthcare, STEM outreach to qualitative methods, the 2017-2018 SPICE projects organize activities throughout the academic year spanning journal clubs, research seminars, career and networking events, speaker series, and more!

GSPB will be hosting an informal info session at Arillaga Dining Commons on Friday, November 10th from 12:30pm-1:30pm in the Wellness Room. Join us to learn more about GSPB and get a free lunch on us! All grad students are welcome, even if you can't stay the whole time. We look forward to seeing you!

Grad Trivia Night is monthly! Typically consisting of seven rounds of questions, including a music and video round, with prizes for the winner of each round. Team registration starts at 7:30pm, and questions start promptly at 8pm. Come early to get a drink on us! There will be a food special as well, usually $5 nachos and $6 burgers. Proof of age is required for alcohol.

Join the GSPB to watch this highly-anticipated movie on Saturday November 11, at 7pm in the Century Cinemas 16 in Mountain View. We (a group of tech-focused law students) will be hosting a meal with food and drink to bring together grad students interested in technology and entrepreneurship. The goal of the dinner is to foster dialogue and partnership across grad departments regarding product development, venture capital, the role of law and regulation in emerging technologies and anything else tech or entrepreneurship related.

Limited space so there is enough food and drink for everyone who attends. This event will be lottery-based if demand is high. Please wait for email confirmation that you've received a spot!

It's the Big Game and your lovely CAs are hosting a massive tailgate for all Stanford graduate students! If you haven't attended a tailgate for an American Football game or haven't had a chance to watch Stanford pummel Cal on our home turf, this is the perfect event for you! We will have all the essentials for a great tailgate; lawn games, snacks, beverages, and music. 

Even better, we will be tailgating on Maloney field, directly next to the stadium. Wear your Stanford attire, and come ready to hang out with tons of other graduate students and support the Cardinal! Beat Cal!
