Welcome to Campus Events

A. Bike Registration. Register your bike with Stanford Transportation. All bikes operated at Stanford must be registered. Cost is $5 and valid for your entirety at Stanford. You must bring your bike. Free bike safety giveaways, bike safety tips, rules of the road, and discounted bike helmet program at the Campus Bike Shop when you register. 9/19. 10AM – 3PM, White Plaza (adjacent to the Stanford Post Office).

B. Breaking Bubbles & Shaking Misconceptions. Life is full of bubbles: your department, school, culture, etc. Come pop some of these and talk about identity at Stanford. Find out about student groups, resources, activism, and campus cultural centers. There will be refreshments & a literal bubble machine. Sponsored by Graduate Student Council, Diversity & Advocacy Committee. 9/16 3:30PM, Nitery Theater.
C. GSIC Session: GLO and CAPS Q&A. The Graduate Life Office and CAPS are here to answer any questions you have about Stanford! Come learn about the resources we have to offer, snacks provided! 9/17. 11AM-12PM, Bogota Room, GCC

D. GOALIE Activities Fair. Enjoy a free lunch from Ray’s Grill while checking out the student organizations plus helpful administrative and student affairs offices at Stanford. One meal ticket/student. Please bring SUID. 9/20. 12PM-2PM, Canfield Courtyard, between the bookstore and Meyer Green.

E. Grad 101. Come hear a panel of grad students talk about what life at Stanford is really like! We will cover topics such as food, housing, transportation, and social life. Come with questions! 9/15. 2PM-3:30PM; 9/16. 10AM-11:30AM, Havana Rm, GCC.

F. GSC Info. Session. Come grab free dinner and hear about opportunities for advocacy, involvement & financial support for student groups across campus. 9/19, 5PM, Havana Room, GCC.

G. New Grad Student Kick-off Lunch. Enjoy lunch with other new grad students! There will be “get-to-know-you” games & prizes for those interested in participating. Info will be provided on how to access the Stanford Alumni Directory and other valuable resources. H. President’s Reception. Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne hosts a welcome reception for new grad students! Marguerite shuttles from Tresidder and the GCC take you to and from so enjoy and afternoon of food and new friends! 9/19 3:30PM, Lou Henry Hoover House, Santa Ynez St.

I. Summer Movie Fest. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and join Stanford Federal Credit Union for an outdoor movie screening, with snacks and activities for everyone to enjoy! Brought to you by SFCU and GLO. 9/20. 7PM, Kennedy Courtyard (check ngso.stanford.edu for updates!) SFCU will be showing Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse.

J. SFCU What's the Dish on Financial Resources. How do you manage money in grad school? Organized by Stanford Federal Credit Union in partnership with Stanford's financial literacy program Mind Over Money to learn about finance basics, common grad student issues, & year-round. K. Art and Architecture Library Tour. Visit the Bowes Art & Architecture Library, the McMurty Building! Learn about unique circulating and locked stacks collections in art, architecture, and design; art holdings; scanning and design stations; and quiet places to study. 9/18 and 9/20 11am-11:30pm 355 Roth Way, 2nd floor of the McMurtry Art & Art History building.

L. Energy Center Tour. Get a look at the innovative Central Energy Facility, the main component of the Stanford Energy System Innovations project that cuts the university's greenhouse gas emissions by 68% & potable water consumption by 18%. The tour requires you to climb stairs and to wear a hard-hat, goggles, and earplugs. 9/17. 10AM, Searsville Road, right off Campus Drive.

M. Green Library Tour & Student Panel. Invaluable information for any grad student! Tour begins at the Green Library entrance near Coupa Cafe. Meet a panel of seasoned grad students who will discuss Library Success Stories & “What They Wish They Knew About Libraries on Day 1.” Meet your subject librarians! N. Map Center Tour. The Center is a new collections-based resource designed to provide access to cartographic information in all of its forms and boasts two high resolution screens including touch, 4 oculus rifts, and a HoloLens (rumseymapcenter.stanford.edu). O. Music Library and Archive of Recorded Sound Tour. Stanford’s home to sound recordings, printed scores, books on music, vintage playback equipment, and more. Please RSVP: https://bit.ly/2LL4TwC. Capacity of each tour is limited to 25. 9/18. 10AM & 11AM, Braun Music Center.

Q. Science and Engineering Libraries Info. Session.  Come for a demo of online information resources including e-books, e-journals, multi-database search engines, and more.  9/18, 1:30PM, Mackenzie Room, 3rd floor of the Huang Engineering Center.

Mental and Physical Wellness

R. American Football 101. Learn about American Football in this hands-on and behind-the-scenes experience. Participate in practice drills led by former Stanford Football players. Pick up your 2019 Red Zone t-shirt before the season starts! Wear comfortable athletic clothes and tennis/running shoes. Students, bring your SUID card to pick up your free shirt! Join Stanford Recreation & Wellness at the American Football 101 event. We’ll be hosting a special activity during the check-in process, handing out signature swag, and sharing info about our programs and offerings. 9/16. 6:30,  Football Turf Practice Field. UPDATE: Event will continue as planned.

S. Cookies and Contemplation. Come join us for an evening of meditation, relaxation, and contemplation. A group meditation will be led by Tia Rich in the peaceful and serene setting of Windhover Contemplative Center. Visit one of the most beautiful buildings on campus and learn about Stanford's offerings for spiritual and physical health.
Tia Rich, PhD, Stanford Senior Specialist in Health Promotion, has been integrating mindfulness, compassion and meditation into stress management and resilience cultivation programs at the University and Medical Center since 1984.Snacks and beverages provided. 9/17 7:30pm Windhover

T. Creating a Culture of Respect. Come discuss and learn about the resources that address issues of sexual and relationship violence, stalking, gender-based discrimination, and sexual harassment over a free lunch from the Office of Sexual Assault and Relationship, Education and Response (SARA), Title IX, and Confidential Support Team. Professional staff will provide info about campus resources to empower you to help create a culture of respect at Stanford. U. Dimensions of Wellness. This workshop invites you to pause and reflect on 8 dimensions of your personal wellness (emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, meaningful, occupational, physical, and social) through a guided self-assessment. Next we'll engage in an interactive discussion about actions and habits that promote holistic wellness. 9/16, 4:30PM, Havana Room, GCC

V. Vaden Health Center Meet and Greet. Drop by the info table outside Vaden and get acquainted with the services offered, including: medical care, mental health care, confidential support, wellness, and others. W. Your Health at Stanford. Representatives from Vaden Health Center will discuss local options for health care and describe how the student health center and Cardinal Care health insurance work together to support your health care needs. 9/17. 10-11AM, Havana Room, GCC

**  Personal Safety: Active Shooter Training. 9/17 1-2pm, Havana Room GCC.  The Stanford University Department of Public Safety will provide a presentation on Active Threat/Shooter training and they will be available to answer your safety and security questions.

X. BEAM - Stanford Career Education Open House. Get a head start on your career planning! Meet BEAM Career Coaches to learn about their innovative services and resources.
MS Engineering and Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences Students: Orientation sessions:
1) 2-3:30pm.
2) 3:45pm-5:15pm (The last 30 min. of each session BEAM's Engineering coaching team will walk you through building a stand out resume). Havana Room, GCC.

Y. CTL: Starting Graduate School Right. Overwhelm and procrastination are common challenges in the demanding and ambiguous world of graduate studies. In this workshop, an academic skills coach from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will present strategies to minimize these obstacles and boost the effectiveness of your planning, reading, and writing. 9/19 9-10AM, 9/20 3-4PM. Z. Meet VPGE - Your Academic Community Starts Here! Learn how VPGE can enrich your academic experiences. Enjoy cool refreshments, meet VPGE staff and new grad students , and learn about Stanford’s unique interdisciplinary environment from current grad students. 9/17. 4PM-5:30PM, Lomita Mall.

AA. Schwab Learning Center Open House. The Schwab Learning Center (SLC) offers learning strategies specifically for students with learner variability (dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning differences) or suspected learner variability. Working with a Learning Specialist, the student obtains a comprehensive Personal Learning Profile. The SLC is also home to the UDL Innovation Studio, udl.stanford.edu, a design space where students and faculty can collaborate on the innovation of learning tools and strategies to prepare students across their lifespan. 9/17. 2-4PM. AC. BCSC Welcome Event. Join the Black Community Services Center for a fun-filled resource fair with food, games, and prizes! Come hang with incoming Black Graduate Students, while meeting current representatives from student organizations and campus programs dedicated to supporting Black graduate students. AD. Brunch Mixer for Couples and Families. Stop by to get brunch and mingle with grad students with families, meet current family/couples at Stanford and get information about resources for partners, spouses, and families of graduate students.
