Academic Resources

The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE) is one of the most important resources available to graduate students. VPGE is responsible for:

  • administering fellowships
  • advancing diversity in graduate education
  • coordinating university-wide graduate policy
  • fostering interdisciplinary learning, leadership and professional development

The Judicial Affairs Office (JAO) is responsible for the student judicial process at Stanford. The office adjudicates cases related to possible student violations of Stanford’s community standards, including the Honor Code and the Fundamental Standard. The JAO also strives to create an educational framework through which many members of the Stanford community can participate in educational opportunities and discussions about the Honor Code and Fundamental Standard, community values, responsibility and integrity.

Accessibility Support

The Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC) is housed in the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) on Salvatierra Way. The SDRC and the OAE are committed to providing support and services that enable students with disabilities to take full advantage of the rich opportunities Stanford has to offer.

Career Support

The Career Development Center (CDC), located on Salvatierra Way, is ready to help you when you need career guidance, interviewing tips, resume writing strategies, networking advice and much more.

Community Standards

Dispute Resolution and Legal Issues

The Ombuds Office is a confidential resource for students, faculty and staff who need help resolving questions, concerns, disputes or complaints. The Ombuds is a neutral, impartial and independent office responsible for protecting the interests and rights of members of the Stanford community.

The Legal Counseling Office (LCO), sponsored by the Associated Studetns of Stanford University (ASSU) and located in Old Union (1st floor), provides free, confidential legal advice and consultation to students at no cost. The LCO gives preliminary advice so that students may be better able to understand the law and seek counsel if necessary.

The Financial Aid Office has information available just for graduate students on its website. Visit to learn more about:

The Student Services Center (SSC) can assist you with administrative and financial questions. Talk to staff in person at the SSC located on the second floor of Tresidder Memorial Union or get help online for issues related to your:

  • university bill
  • financial aid disbursements
  • refunds
  • payroll deductions
  • enrollment
  • Stanford ID card
  • degree policies and procedures

Health and Counseling Resources

Vaden Health Center, located on campus, has medical services, a pharmacy and a counseling center open to students.

Vaden’s Health Promotion Services (HPS) sponsors wellness classes, workshops and seminars, as well as individual consultations, focused on helping students enjoy a healthy quality of life.

Vaden’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) counsels students with personal, academic and relationship concerns through short-term individual or group sessions (including couples counseling).

The Bridge Peer Counseling Center offers confidential counseling 24 hours/day by phone or in person. Counselors are trained students and services are free and completely confidential.

Sexual Assault, Relationship Abuse, and Stalking

The Sexual Assault Advisory Board also offers a number of resources related to sexual assault, relationship abuse and stalking

On site Vaden co-sponsors the YWCA Sexual Assault Center for students, staff and faculty who believe that are victims of sexual assault.

International Students

The Bechtel International Center offers a variety of services and programs dedicated to enhancing the lives of Stanford’s graduate student population and easing the transition to what may be a new and different culture for students and their families. The I-Center’s resources can be accessed on line, but students are also encouraged to drop by and take advantage of staff that are ready to welcome new and familiar faces.

Safety

Stanford’s Department of Public Safety provides law enforcement, security, safety, crime prevention and emergency services 24 hours a day from its office on campus.

Sexual Assault and Harassment

The Sexual Harassment Policy Office exists to further the university’s goal, as expressed by Provost John Etchemendy, to provide “a place of work and study that is free of sexual harassment and all forms of intimidation or exploitation.”

Student Communities and Groups

Student Activities and Leadership (SAL) works with the more than 600 student organizations that exist at Stanford. SAL advises student groups and student leaders, provides event planning and program planning guidance, and has staff that know the ins and outs of organizing small and large events. SAL is located in Old Union (2nd floor). For a full listing of student groups, see:

Four ethnic community centers support and foster the rich diversity which is a hallmark of the Stanford student population. Each center offers academic and cultural programming, leadership opportunities, mentoring, community development, academic guidance and a common meeting place for students from specific communities.

The LGBT Community Resources Center features a range of resources and programs that are helpful to LGBT students and allies. Visit the center on the second floor of the Fire Truck House (located west of Tresidder on Santa Teresa Street) or check the website.

The Women’s Community Center (WCC) focuses on the success of women students by sponsoring programs focused on leadership, scholarship and activism. Visit the WCC in the Old Fire Truck House (Santa Teresa Street).

The Office for Religious Life is located in Old Union (3rd floor) with staff from multi-faith traditions who are dedicated to promoting the spiritual, religious and ethical life of the Stanford community.
